Today, Sunday January 26, 2020, Catholics throughout the United States of America are celebrating WORD OF GOD Sunday. In every diocese and parish, the most suitable and effective ways have been planned to live this Sunday in such a way as to help the People of God grow in religious and intimate familiarity with the Sacred Scriptures.

Inspired by a message from Pope Francis, the ST PAULS Biblical Center of the USA, in collaboration with the Community of Paulines in Canfield, Ohio, has chosen to enhance the SUNDAY OF THE WORD by making possible free of charge a copy of the Alba House Gospels to all who attend the two Masses of this local community. In these Masses celebrated at 7:00 am and 10 am and televised by CTNY (the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown), Father Edmund Lane and Father Matthew Roehrig stressed in their homilies the importance of knowing, reading and meditating on the Sacred Text each day, in addition to a clear and complete explanation of the "places" of the Word on the altar of the church.

Those who accept these copies of Sacred Scripture take on the responsibility to carefully read, meditate and transmit the word of God with their own words and works each day. Fruit of the apostolate of the Society of St. Paul, great help in the distribution of these Gospels was provided by Friends of the Community and by the local Council of the Knights of Columbus.

On Sunday, October 6, 2019, in Staten Island, New York, the Society of St. Paul in the USA rejoiced over the 25th Jubilee of Brother Marco Bulgarelli (Italy) and our Brother Javier Lee (South Korea). On this happy occasion, the Holy Sacrifice of Mass was celebrated by Fr. Tony Bautista, SSP Delegate to US Province with Fr. Jeffrey Mickler, SSP, Director of Aggregate Institutes. The Jubilarians proudly renewed their vows which were received by Fr. Tony Bautista and witnessed by all present including the SSP Clergy and Brothers, along Members of the Pauline Family who were present-- the Daughters of St. Paul and Association of Pauline Cooperators, their family and friends and the local community attending worship.  A delightful meal followed.

Brother Marco Bulgarelli is the US Provincial Bursar and Head of ST. PAULS Biblical Center. Since his arrival in New York, Brother Marco has written and published several books including, “Saints of the USA”, “A Saint for Healing”, and the Biblical Meditations Series on “Joy”, “Love, “Friendship” and “Walking Beside You”.  In June 2019, he organized ST PAULS International Bible Days, a series of introductory talks on the Bible in English, Spanish and Tagalog, along with an exhibition of Bibles from around the world in many languages.   Bro. Marco is Society’s liaison with Italian communities in New York and Ohio.

Brother Javier Lee helps in the managing of the ST. PAULS Books and Gifts in Staten Island, NY, as the Society has a large number of Korean-language Bibles. In keeping with the Founder’s mandate to use the fastest and most effective means, Brother Javier uses the computer systems for the best management of the books & gift store.  Brother Javier is the Society’s liaison with the Korean community on Staten Island, New York.

Saturday 20, during the fraternal visit in the USA of the General Councilors Fr. Jose Pottayil and Fr. Celso Godilano and in the presence of the Delegate Fr. Tony Bautista, the inauguration and blessing of the renovated east wing of the community of Canfield OH took place. After a few months of restructuring, we now have six accessible rooms, also equipped to meet the requirements of people with special needs. All the rooms have a ceiling fan and the windows are prepared for the air conditioner. Bathrooms with flat shower floors have bars on the walls. One room also has a hospital bed. The work was carried out by a Knight of Columbus, a friend of the community, Thomas Kelley of Vector Construction who also donated new mattresses for the rooms. The community also has the help of the Agency of Aging of Niles OH who, in close contact with the superior of the community, Fr. Matthew Roehrig, provide numerous services to our Ohio resident members.

From 30 July to 2 August the CMN (Catholic Marketing Network) 2019 Trade Show was held in Lancaster PA, in the heart of the Amish Country. The CMN Event is the premier opportunity in the USA to connect face to face and build relationships with Catholic customers, clients and collaborators. STPAULS was present, also this year with a stand and its best production of books and Bibles in English and Spanish. Mrs Dora Torres of the Marketing Department and Father Arcángel Cárdenas were permanently present at the stand. Other Paulines have helped in the transport and in the setup of the material. Employees and Paulines from other countries (Australia and Great Britain) visited the Trade Show during the days of the exhibition.

Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June, the ST PAULS International Bible Days, the first event organized by the USA St Pauls Biblical Center took place in the community of Staten Island NY. The inspiration came from our Founder, Blessed James Alberione: “Start from Bethlehem”, so the event was organized by volunteers and with a minimum budget. In particular, nothing would have been possible without the availability of our three speakers Fr. Arcángel Cárdenas SSP (Spanish Session), Fr. Robert Hospodar IGS (English Session) and Fr. Tony Bautista SSP (Tagalog Session), and in particular without the help of the two cooperators / volunteers Margie Skeels and her husband John Rolfe Skeels, who made this event possible. Every Session consisted of the celebration of Holy Mass and of a Bible Presentation/Conversation in one of three languages. The Bible Exhibit shows over 96 Bibles in 20 languages (not counting the multilingual Bibles). Particularly welcome was the visit to the exhibition, by Sr. Micaela Monetti, Superior General of the Disciples Sisters and of some members of her Council. Interestingly, the range of Bibles include in addition to English, Spanish and Tagalog and other major languages, also some curiosities, including the Native American languages as Dakota, Navajo, Ojibwe and Hawaiian, the Amish Bible in Pennsylvania Dutch and even the Gospel in Milanese dialect (spoken in Milan – Italy). Public participation in all three sessions was fairly good. We hope to be able to repeat the experience on a regular basis.
