Sea travel was also a perilous business, as the narrative of Acts confirms. During Paul’s journey in captivity to Rome, Paul suffered shipwreck. All hope of being saved was abandoned. It was nothing short of a miracle that Paul and his fellow passengers were saved.

There were also dangers from his “own countrymen,” the Jews. Five times Paul received “forty lashes less one” (2 Cor 11:24), a form of synagogue disciplinary punishment. Hostile Jews were ready to murder him if they could.
