Cardinal Francis GeorgeThe two members of the newly formed Chicago community, Fr Arcangel Cardenas and Br Peter Lyne, together with Fr Michael Goonan, the General Director of the Apostolate, met with Cardinal Francis George of Chicago on Wednesday, November 5. It was an opportunity for the Chicago members to introduce themselves to the Cardinal and to thank him for inviting the Society of St Paul to open a house in his Archdiocese.

During a pleasant 45 minute meeting, the Cardinal expressed his delight at the arrival of the Society of St Paul in Chicago and spoke of his great admiration for Blessed James Alberione. As a member of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, he had studied the cause for beatification of our founder and had given it his strong endorsement.

Cardinal George steps down as Archbishop of Chicago on November 18, when Bishop Blasé Cupich will be installed as the ninth Archbishop of Chicago.

In Chicago the Society of St Paul is renting a former convent for the community beside Holy Rosary Church, on N Western Avenue, some 4.6 miles (7 kilometers) north-west of the city center. A commercial property has been purchased in the north-western part of Chicago for a multilingual book center that will focus on the distribution of the Bible and biblical aids in many languages, but principally English, Spanish, Korean and Polish. It will take some months for the center to be ready. In the meantime our Chicago members are focusing on an outreach program with book exhibits in parishes and at diocesan functions, as well as getting to know the Archdiocese.
