Not so many God-fearers, however, turned proselytes and became full Jews by submitting to circumcision. There were three main obstacles: the universal odium in which Jews were held by the Gentiles, the dire penalties from the synagogue for breaches of the law that one would not have faced if one did not become a proselyte, and the pain involved in the surgical process of circumcision.
